Cybersecurity Specialist (Cybersecurity Specialist). : Contemporary Challenges and Key Competencies 2025+

With the growing number and complexity of cyber threats, the role of the cyber security specialist is becoming critical for any organization. Major challenges include protecting data, systems and infrastructure in increasingly complex environments - on-premise, cloud and hybrid. Proactive risk management, effective response to security incidents and ensuring business continuity are becoming essential.

Key technical skills for a cyber security specialist include security of networks, operating systems, applications (with a focus on standards such as OWASP), cloud security (AWS, Azure), operation of SIEM tools (e.g. QRadar), conducting penetration tests, knowledge of cryptography, identity and access management (IAM) and implementation of DevSecOps practices. Equally important are analytical competencies, such as system log analysis, anomaly detection and the ability to think like a potential attacker. Soft competencies include effective communication (especially in crisis situations), meticulousness and attention to detail, willingness to continuously learn in response to constantly evolving threats, and high stress tolerance. Familiarity with current regulations and standards, such as RODO, the NIS2 Directive and ISO 27001, is also essential.

Cyber security is a field that goes beyond technology alone to include people and processes. The World Economic Forum identifies "Networking and Cyber Security" as one of the leading, most in-demand skills in the job market. A successful professional must not only be proficient with tools, but also understand the strategies and tactics used by attackers (e.g., based on MITRE's ATT&CK framework) and be able to build resilient systems and, just as importantly, educate users about cyber threats.

Rationale

The combination of solid technical knowledge with risk management and auditing competencies, in-depth knowledge of standards and frameworks (TOGAF, ISO 27001, NIS2), and the ability to communicate strategically with the board of directors allows for building a holistic and proactive approach to cyber security in the organization, treated as an integral part of the business strategy.
