IMS Database Performance and Tuning
The IMS Database Performance and Tuning training course is an advanced course that focuses on optimizing Information Management System (IMS) database performance. Participants will gain a working knowledge of IMS database tuning in IMS/Batch, IMS/Data Communications (DC), CICS-Local-Data Language One (DL/I) and Data Base Control (DBCTL) environments. The course covers key aspects affecting performance, such as configuring datasets and buffers for VSAM and OSAM. In addition, participants will learn methods for estimating performance prior to deployment and consolidate the skills learned through seven hands-on machine learning labs.
Issues
The training covers a wide range of topics related to IMS database performance:
-
Performance data analysis of the IMS database environment
-
Selection of IMS access methods that provide the best database performance
-
Optimize performance by selecting buffer pools and buffer pool options
-
Implementation of optimal performance options for VSAM datasets
-
Assessing the need for secondary indexes and selecting implementation options
-
Selecting physical database implementation options to improve performance
-
HDAM randomization parameter selection for improved key randomization process
Benefits
- The skills necessary to significantly improve the performance of IMS database systems
- They will learn to analyze performance data, select optimal access methods and implement advanced optimization techniques
- The course will provide an understanding of the impact of various configuration parameters on system performance, which will translate into more efficient management of IT resources in the organization
- Hands-on labs will enable participants to immediately apply the knowledge gained in real-world scenarios, which will accelerate the learning process and increase confidence in optimization decisions
Who is this training for?
Prerequisites
- Participants are expected to have completed the IMS Physical Organization of Databases Workshop course or have 4-6 months of experience working with the IMS database system
- Candidates should understand the physical organization and processing characteristics of HISAM, HIDAM and HDAM access methods
- The ability to code DBD and PSB macros to implement secondary indexing and physical HISAM, HIDAM and HDAM databases is also important
- Participants should be familiar with the characteristics of physical secondary index storage and the software requirements associated with its use
- In addition, familiarity with IMS tools for loading and reorganizing logically linked secondary index databases and the ability to use VSAM access services is expected
