z/OS System Services Structure

This course introduces the structure and control blocks of the z/OS BCP and system services. It prepares the new z/OS programmer to identify potential bottlenecks and performance problems, perform initial error symptom collection, and identify z/OS system customization opportunities and requirements. This course also provides the initial information needed for further training in specialized areas such as system measurement and tuning and identifying system problems.

Issues

  • Explain the MVS functions and control blocks necessary to handle the task in a multitasking and multiprocessing environment

  • Describe the software and hardware functions that enable a program to interact with programs running in other address spaces, use data in other address spaces, and use data in data spaces

  • Track the flow of input/output operations from the initial request in the application program to the completion of the data transfer

  • Identify control blocks that describe the current state of the input/output request

  • Describing the functions of virtual, real and auxiliary storage managers in z/OS BCP

  • Describe the functions performed by the Recovery Termination Manager and recovery management components to minimize the impact of failures and improve error correction

  • Selecting the appropriate IBM publication for further technical information (SRL, technical bulletins, self-study and other z/OS courses)

  • Describe the services provided by extended inter-system services (XES)

  • Define and explain the purpose of cache structures, lists and locks

  • Planning the implementation of STAR global resource serialization in the environment

Who is this training for?

The primary audience for this intermediate course is z/OS developers who are new to installing, customizing, measuring and tuning z/OS or identifying problems
